🎧 STAGE 1 – CALVARY CHURCH
The Holy Calvary of Peace is a place where art, faith and landscape come together in a unique atmosphere.
Every architectural and naturalistic element recalls the moments of the Passion, transforming the site into a true oasis of rare beauty and profound spirituality.
It presents itself as an authentic garden of the soul, set on a hill overlooking the surrounding scenery.
The small church on the summit, built in 1833 following a mission of the Liguorini Fathers, holds a very precious fragment of the Cross of Christ.
A long, scenic stone staircase leads to the churchyard, in the center of which a stone medallion, the work of bisacquinese Salvatore Ragusa, depicts the pierced Sacred Heart. On the facade of the church emerge bas-reliefs by the same author, including one inspired by Leonardo’s celebrated Last Supper.
The stones of the staircase were brought by mules to be carved on site thanks to the industriousness of the Confraternity SS. Crocifisso.
To the side stands a small bell tower, built by salvaging the church bell of the now defunct former Scavotto Hospital.
The small church welcomes visitors with a fine altar and a statue of Our Lady of Sorrows. The floor, redone in the 1970s, is decorated with a mosaic inspired by Michelangelo’s Pieta, signed by architect Giuseppe Marino.
Two side ramps lead up to the terrace, where a large cross stands, a symbol of the community’s faith.
Inside the old cross that was on the roof, bricked into the concrete, a leather case was found with the original document certifying the relic’s origin inside.
On Good Friday, under the centuries-old olive trees, the famous “Lamentanze” are sung: ancient and fascinating dirges, in Sicilian dialect, by unknown composers, that evoke the Passion and Death of Jesus, offering an intense and engaging emotional experience.
