Bisacquino, a mountain village embraced by the relief of the Sicani Mountains, rises about 700 meters above sea level at the foot of Mount Triona.

Its name has controversial origins: some say it derives from the Latin bis-acqua, meaning “double water,” in reference to the abundance of springs and streams in the area; others speculate an Arabic etymology, busukin, which translates to “father of the knife,” alluding to the historic craft tradition of bisacquinese cutlery.

Archaeological evidence tells us of human habitation dating back to prehistoric times. Lithic and ceramic artifacts found in rural districts and on Mount Triona indicate the presence of settlements since theBronze Age.

With thearrival of the Arabs in 840, Bisacquino was reborn as an agricultural and strategic center, leaving traces in the urban layout and toponymy.

Later, under the Normans, Swabians and Angevins, the town was structured into an ecclesiastical fiefdom, dependent for centuries on the archbishops of Monreale, who promoted its construction of churches and convents.

Bisacquino is also known by the appellation“Nobilis Universitas,” a title that has its origins in the period when the town enjoyed a recognized and celebrated administrative autonomy.

This title, translated from Latin as “Noble University,” refers not to an athenaeum, but to the ancient municipal order, an expression of civic dignity and identity of a cultured, industrious people loyal to their history.

Today, to travel through Bisacquino is to cross a stratification of cultures: the stones, alleys, towers and ruins speak of a multifaceted past that is still alive.

Mount Triona, an ancient natural stronghold and sentinel of history, will be one of the central stops on our journey. But our journey begins here: in the oldest soul of the country, where history and myth are intertwined, and where every step is telling.

🎧 STAGE 1 – TO THE ORIGINS OF BISACQUINO: BETWEEN HISTORY, MYTH AND ARCHAEOLOGY Welcome to the beginning of our historical-archaeological itinerary, a journey rooted in the deepest heart of Sicily.
