Shortly thereafter, by the will of devotees and with the approval of the diocesan visitor, the Confraternity of Saint Lucy was born, which changed its titling and oversaw its first restoration.

Externally, the church has a simple gabled façade of exposed tuff ashlars, devoid of decoration, completed in 1858 by a stone bell tower. The interior, with a single hall, reflects the sober elegance of 18th-century Sicilian Baroque: pilasters, string-course cornices and white stucco mold the space harmoniously.

The high altar houses a wooden statue of St. Lucy, made around 1880 and attributed to bisacquinese carver Giuseppe Saladino. On the side walls, four valuable 18th-century canvases are preserved, including the altarpiece of St. Francis Xavier Preaching to the Infidels, rich in oriental costumes, and the copy of the “Mystic Marriage of St. Catherine,” inspired by Correggio’s work.

In the sacristy, a treat: amajolica hydria from Burgio, dated 1795, finely decorated with floral and anthropomorphic motifs. This object, along with the altar furnishings from the destroyed church of San Nicolò alla Badia, tells a story of recovery, devotion and local craftsmanship.

The Church of Saint Lucy is now one of the village’s most intimate and evocative places: a symbol of silent faith and guardian of a precious artistic heritage.

🎧 STAGE 6 – CHURCH OF SAINT LUCIA In the old part of Bisacquino, along a quiet and peaceful street, stands the small Church of Santa Lucia, a treasure chest of popular faith and historical memory.
