In 1908 the facade was remodeled, resulting in a linear, gabled façade, devoid of decoration and characterized by a local stone lintel that welcomes worshippers at the entrance.

Inside, the decorative language is entirely inspired by the eighteenth-century style: polished white stucco, elegant cornices, and pilasters that punctuate the space. The floor, made of concrete by local architect Alberto Guarino, is embellished with circular designs that recall the ornamental tradition of the time and lend an atmosphere of great restraint and beauty.

One of the most precious items kept by the church is the painting on slate, dating from the 1700s, depicting the miraculous effigy of the Madonna and Child Jesus. Tradition has it that this painting was brought from Rome by Fra Innocenzo da Chiusa, of the Observant Minorites.

According to the story, Brother Innocent, finding relief from fatigue thanks to theblessed water from a nearby fountain, drew inspiration from it, and from that moment the painting was the object of deep faith and popular veneration.

Together with the coeval bell tower, also made of stone and reminiscent of the typical seventeenth-century style, the church as a whole stands as a living testimony to the religious and artistic history of the area. The fusion of ancient elements with 20th-century renovations enriches this sacred space, making it a place of silent meditation and deep cultural identity for Bisacquinesi.

🎧 STAGE 8 – CHURCH OF SAINT MARY OF JESUS Welcome to the Church of Saint Mary of Jesus, one of the oldest sacred places in Bisacquino.
