{"id":923,"date":"2025-05-25T11:24:30","date_gmt":"2025-05-25T09:24:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bisacquino.com\/church-of-st-francis-of-paola\/"},"modified":"2025-07-19T00:04:27","modified_gmt":"2025-07-18T22:04:27","slug":"church-of-st-francis-of-paola","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bisacquino.com\/en\/church-of-st-francis-of-paola\/","title":{"rendered":"Church of St. Francis of Paola"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\ud83c\udfa7 STAGE 10 &#8211; CHURCH OF SAN FRANCESCO DI PAOLA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Founded in 1799 by Canon Bartolomeo Del Giorgio, the Church of San Francesco di Paola represents one of the most elegant examples of <strong>neoclassical architecture in Bisacquino.<\/strong> The building was enlarged in the first half of the 19th century by Tommaso Del Giorgio and renovated over time with numerous interventions: in 1885 the large chapel was modernized by master <strong>Alberto Guarino<\/strong>; in 1902 the bell tower was raised; and in 1913 the fa\u00e7ade was redone by the wall painter Salvatore Capritto. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The church, with a single hall, features <strong>a barrel vault and a deep presbytery<\/strong>. The sober but harmonious architectural lines culminate in the high altar, where <strong>double Corinthian columns support broken tympanums<\/strong>, creating a refined liturgical stage set. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dominating the altar niche is a wooden statue of the titular saint, St. Francis of Paola. Although profusely repainted, its main iconographic features can be admired: the brown hooded habit, the hermit&#8217;s staff and the medallion on the chest with the inscription &#8220;Charitas.&#8221; The statue came from a chapel founded in 1761 in the church of St. Anthony Abbot and was transferred here in 1805.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also inside the church are two wooden statues of great interest: <strong>St. Vincent Ferrer and St. Anthony of Padua<\/strong>, both from the destroyed church of St. Mary Magdalene.
